What's the point?

There is so much pressure on us to determine our purpose in life.  Whether that's the career we will choose or what God has called us to do, we feel the need to get it right.

I remember when I was trying to work out which 'A' Levels to take, trying to figure out what I wanted to 'be', and it was tough. At other times I was worried about 'missing' God's plan for my life (as if the plans of God could be thrown off by me!! but that's another message).

Whatever the expression of your purpose is, there is one main point to it!  We are called to become more and more like Jesus

Romans 8:29  tells us that our destiny is to be conformed to the image of God's son.

"For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren."

Your one goal in life must be to be like Jesus.  Being like him is not achieved by modifying our behaviour or by trying hard, but today I suggest it is this: when we learn to believe like Jesus did, we will act like he did and we will be like him.

Jesus believed that he was the Son of God.  He believed that he was beloved, and He believed God had empowered him to fulfil his mission.  He knew who he was and that he was deeply loved and approved of ("This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased"). From this standpoint, he was able to handle rejection, challenges and demonic activity; he could work miracles, prophecy, speak wisdom, be compassionate and do all that he saw the Father doing.

To believe like this, we need to spend time searching for Jesus in the Scriptures and reminding our hearts that as he is, so are we in this world (1 John 4:17). Once we begin to take hold of that, we will fulfil the call of God in our lives and live purposefully.
