Give me a sign!

In Exodus 3 God has met with Moses and he is sending him out to go and liberate the people of Israel. Moses is protesting this assignment and says to God "Who I am to do this?" In verse 12, it says this:
God answered, “I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain.”

Have you ever thought about the fact that when we look at a sign, it's not really the sign that is important to us, it is more important that we see and understand what the sign is referring to that is the issue.


For example,  in the event of fire, we don't go to the EXIT sign and stop. We look for it only to guide us to the door to take us away from trouble. 

Have you ever asked God for a sign? 

What if He gave you a sign and you stopped at it and never went on to see what it was really showing you?

Even weirder than that! Let's look at the first paragraph again.   Moses is protesting about the fact that God has chosen him.  He basically asks God "Who am I to do this?". God offers him a sign!!  Great. I would definitely be up for a sign to show me God's plan in my life right? 

Hmm! The 'sign' God gives Moses is this...When you actually do what I said you will do, you'll stand back here and worship me and THAT will be the sign that I am the one who has sent you.

That to me is backwards.  Moses has to do the thing before he gets the sign that he is being sent by God to do it!  That doesn't sound like a sign! (I hope that makes sense what I am trying to say).

Signs are great, but they are only great because they point to something we need.  It is like that in the word.  If you only look at the signs, you will miss what they pointing to.

You may think a sign is a nice colour, or a good shape, or really bright, but if you do not pay attention to what they are trying to tell you, you will miss out! Many people get stuck in the signs without ever finding what they pointed to.  We can see that in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, everything points to Jesus, but the NT people got so focussed on things themselves instead of looking past them and seeing that Jesus was the Messiah, not some political figure who would overthrow the Romans.

God's generally doesn't give the signs first.   Without faith it is impossible to please God.  God asks us to step out and go, but we'll know it's Him when we see the end results.  It's not how I'd like it 😆, but it is God's way. 

I struggled with the Old Testament, until I began to see how everything pointed to Christ.  It's really exciting!

What's important is that when we look through the word and see all the signs pointing to Christ, we can't just stop there!  We need go and and find Jesus for ourselves in every circumstance. When you need healing in your body, walk past the signs of the brazen serpent, and see that Jesus was the one lifted up for your healing.  He IS the Healer; you need an encounter with Him.  When you need peace, look past the sign that shows Noah in the Ark in the face of adversity safe and dry, and realise that Jesus IS the ark that safely carries us. 

Today whatever you are in the middle of, don't miss out because you see the signs, and never go on and see what they are pointing to!
